It seems doughnuts are the new cupcakes. I thought I'd try out the baked variety. I've been tempted by all the pretty Pinterest pictures out there.
I used a Williams-Sonoma buttermilk doughnut recipe you can get here. They are easy to whip up and the toppings are, of course, endless. I decided to go with the classic chocolate dip version to test out on the kids. The verdict? They loved them. I thought they were too muffin-y. I think I'll try a cake flour based recipe next time.
I picked up a doughnut pan from a local bakery supply store (McCalls). I bought a Wilton and it worked out great. No sticking doughnuts here. I was a little worried though when I pulled them out of the oven and they looked like this....
but when you flip them over they look very doughnut-like don't you think. I dunked them in some chocolate glaze and sprinkles and they were ready to go.
If you'd rather buy them then be sure to check out some of the new artisan doughnut shops that have popped up in Toronto. Some old, some new. You can read the reviews here.
Happy weekend!
Debra
